Hi guys be informed that 2 Javelins 2 plus 2 or 3 more F18HTs (Ventilos and old Bims) are attending the most important French beach cat regatta. In this 2002 event more than 400 cats entered the race, which is scheduled from May 1 to May 4. Till now no new has been posted with the regard to the results. Anyway I hope that our International F18HT Secretary - Jackie Cooper -, who is racing with Mirko Giannin on a new Javelin 2, will post a report on the Event.

Thanks for keeping us posted. When you get the results, could you please post them as well? It's hard to keep up with what is going on in Europe from over here in the USA. Good luck to all the F18HT's! Tim Bohan, USA 5

Tim, I was not there, so I cannot tell you much about what happened at Carnac. I was able to find only two Italian F18HT in the final result (in C.T.) of the C1 group posted on the Carnac official site (not in the first positions). Anyway I asked by Email the Secretary of the International F18HT class, Jackie Cooper, who entered the event, to post a report on the Regatta on this site

I have some results and a short report of the wind conditions : This is the short report I received "the first three races were very light and shifty, race 3 was a complete lottery with 90% of the fleet finishing in a gust within 2 minutes of each other, races 4 and 5 were in constant wind 15 - 18 knots, the raid was again 15 - 18 knots." The following data was gethered from www.alyzea.com/eurocat2002/feneures.htmlF18HT's were 131 and 116 and another (Bim F18HT 2000) but I don't know the sailnumber of that. I assume that you are also interested in the brother class which is the F16 class. So I will list those too. F16's - Spitfire by Neill Mangan and Stealth by John Pierce (The ones I know of, but there were more I think) All boats started in the same fleet and raced the same courses. Finishings (out of 63 seriously competing boats): F18HT's 32th 116 MONTI Matteo/ RAFFAELLI Federico VELA CLUB MARANO 117.00 : 4 24 DNF 46 43 0 (strike out the DNF) 24th 131 GORI Pierpaolo/ BRUNELLI ALDO CLUB NAUTICO RIMINI 88.50 : 16 25 23 24 28 0 (strike out the 28) The 16's 11 th 521 PIERCE JOHN/ DAVIS SUE club CARSINGTON 55.50 : 28 15 13 12 15 0 (strike out the 28) 31 th 011 MANGAN Neil/LAURENCE Anny Jane BLESSINGTON S.C 113.50 : 12 11 17 DNF DNF 0 (Strike out one DNF) The Raid standings (221 boats competing); 62th 521 PIERCE JOHN/DAVIS SUE GBR MC1 17 34 elapsed 03:08:58 rated 03:07:06 97th 011 MANGAN Neil/LAURENCE Anny Jane IRL MC1 25 50 elapsed 03:21:05 Rated 03:13:20 176th 116 MONTI Matteo/RAFFAELLI Federico ITA MC1 39 78 elapsed 03:31:08 Rated 03:35:26 Not ranked 131 GORI Pierpaolo/BRUNELLI ALDO ITA MC1 --- 146 DNF With kind regards, Wouter

The raid consisted of a 1 mile reach, then a 2mile reach, then about 1 hour of downwind, predominately on port tack, then a 40 minute reach, then a 40 minute beat.

Thanks for that information, Wouter. Looks like John Pierce had a good regatta! I wish there had been some 16HP's and Tigers in the Mug race we did last weekend to have something to compare the Jav 2 to. I was out sailing on my lake last evening in about 15 knots of wind, I figured out how to get the boat up on a plane! It really gets cooking if you get your weight back and get the knuckle of the lee bow just up out of the water, and keep the windward hull on the water instead of flying it...spreads the weight out better and allows the leeward hull to plane. Goes really fast! Take care. Tim

Tim, It sounds as if you are enjoying your boat. Keep sending the info. I enjoy reading what is going on down south. I read your observation on getting the boat to plane. I have not had the opportunity to do this yet on the HT, but on the I-20 it seemed as though it would plane just like you said, with the winward hull down. Anyone else have any thoughts? Chris

Chris...I used to believe that to put your weight back was bad...too much drag from the stern, and I always tried to sail my Nacra 5.5 level, that is, with about 5" of lee bow in the water going upwind or on a reach. This boat is different. It has a much flatter bottom from about 5' back all the way aft (like the Inter 20 I guess) and if you can get the lee bow up out of the water, and keep the windward hull down in the water, without dragging the sterns (you have to have enough wind to get it up on a plane...I'm guessing at least 10 knots) it will skipp along on top of the water fast, like my windsurfer! Makes the same sound too...slapity slap-slap...I pulled the boards up about 75% to keep the windward hull down and it worked (on a reach). More testing to come next week. There is a regatta up in Deleware this weekend, WF said there will be 4 Jav 2's there! Should be very interesting! Stay tuned for more. Tim

Tim,
Yes a few of them out in the mug race would have been nice.
I think 2 T's were at the Mayday regatta where also Jamie was sailing his J.B.
Happy sailing,
Wouter

Hi all 18HT friends,
Sorry for the delay in posting my report on the Carnac regatta but I went straight to work in Bologna from the race and arrived back home last Friday night.
Firstly, I would like to say that no Ventilo 18s or other F18HTs turned up as the weather forecasts were not at all brilliant at the time. In fact, on arrival with two new Jav B's (EUR 101, EUR 116) and one Bim 18HT 2000 (EUR 131) on the Sunday before the race, it was impossible to sail beforehand and try out the boats (and ourselves!!!).
On day one, in the CI group, only one race was run due to very light and shifty winds. After the handicap rating was applied, EUR 116 stood 4th (1st overall), EUR 101 14th and EUR 131 16th (first important race for this new crew). The Houart race, scheduled for the following day was cancelled and another 4 ‘banana’ races were run with 1 in light winds, 1 with a gusty finish and two in much stronger conditions. Unfortunately, EUR 101 tore their spinnaker badly during the first race and returned to shore quickly (DNF) to repair before the next three races. This inevitably led to further problems for the whole day and again in the last race they finished DNF.
This series of races were run on two separate courses. The Formula 18 and CI groups raced on the Orange circuit with Formula 18’s departing first and the C1 group after 5/10 mins and it was therefore impossible to measure with the F18s.
In the Houart race on Saturday, EUR 116 and EUR 131 started badly and did not gain good positions (EUR 131 - DNF). EUR 101 did not take part in this race as they had to be back in Italy on Sunday.
Results available at ‘www.alyzea.com.’, however do not specify boat types in the CI group and it is therefore difficult to work out who and what were where!!!!.
If I find any other details on the race I will keep you posted.
We are now preparing for the Europeans and look forward to meeting our US friends in July in Bellaria. See you soon Jackie
