Now that the boats have been sailed a few times, can anybody give me an idea of what the ideal weight range is? Once the wind picks up to 15-20 can you hold the boat down at 310, or do you have to be more in the 350 range. I guess my real question is, can mixed teams be competitive on this boat, or is it more of a two man operation

Based on my limited experience sailing the HT solo (I weigh 180) in about 10-15, I would say that 310 lbs would have no problem going upwind and downwind...a tight reach might be a different story if you use the spinnaker. The good news is, there is no jib for the mixed crew to have to deal with and the spinnaker is very easy to handle if you put a snuffer on the boat. I have two blocks on each side of the spinnaker sheets, one ratchet back at the shrouds, another turning block on the forward beam, and it helps me to hold the spinnaker sheet while out on the wire solo. If it gets wild, I just head off more...but that won't work if you are trying to get to a B mark, unless you go low and fast, then take the spin. down and head up to the mark. The first couple times I sailed it I was concerned, but with every time out I learn new ways to control the HT in more wind, and I like it more every time I sail it! You should try to get to a regatta where there will be some and give it a try. It is nice to have a fast boat when I go out solo in light air, air that I woulnd't even consider sailing in on the Nacra 5.5 I used to have. What are the average conditions where you sail? That is what lead me to this boat. Take care and have fun. Tim Bohan, F18HT USA 5.

I've been sailing with my wife on a bim 18 HT for 6 years, and our weight is 250lbs (she is very very light). We've sailed under any condition, even with 32 knots wind, and I can say it is much more easy for us to sail under strong wind with a 18 HT than with a nacra 5.5 (it was our previous boat). We aren't the best upwind, but I've never met any boat that could follow us downwind. ;D
