In his report Rick White writes that the snuffers worked badly in heavy air both on F18HTs than on Taipans 4,9! In Italy snuffers are almost unknown. I would like to ask the F18HT crews attending the NAs if they anyway support the utilisation of this device?

I spoke with W.F today and he said the only problems with snuffers were caused by sailor error. The crews let the tack line off before getting the sail down and this caused the problems. This system is the only real way to launch and recover the spinnaker, if you take a look at the Tornado class and the top F18 sailors you will see they all use a snuffer of some type.
I believe the publicity is due to the writers personal dislike for spinnakers and snuffers and preference for a reacher type headsail set on a roller furling system.

The snuffer system is definitely faster than a tramp bag. I've done both on Tornado's and the HT, and can't imagine keeping up with other boats in a buoy race using a bag. I think you'd lose too much time around the marks relative to the rest of the fleet.
Releasing the tack line too early and not moving fast enough on the retrieval line are the most common errors. When you get it right, it's incredibly efficient and fast.
We had troubles with ours mostly due to sailor error (me). You can see this in the picture on Catsailor; I'm the one on the front of the boat retrieving the spinnaker.
